Rik “Yonder” Goodell – Provin’ Up Wise
Preferring the Cowboy handle of “Yonder,” this skilled Montana Cowboy Poet draws from his personal experiences on a cow-calf operation and horse ranch and, of course, an abiding love and respect for all things Cowboy. He is also an actor, so once again his very real conversational delivery carries the day. Few if any reciters handle that task any better! He’s more concerned with “speaking it” rather than demonstrating where the rhymes fall.
There are gemstones to be found throughout, but particular picks in the collection include a campfire life portrait “Chuckwagon Home,” the self-assessing “I’m Just Not Sure,” an account based on the Irish immigrant experience in the West “Mellowed By Time,” the memory of “My First Horse,” then the first horse most of us really had “Ol’ Sticky,” the reflectively panoramic “Seein’ Gratitude” and Cowboy proposal jitters not faced down in “Wastin’ A Worry.”
In historically focused Cowboy verse its nice to have the “period” but it’s even nicer to have a point. You get both from “Yonder.” Sixteen tracks, highly recommended.
