Mae McCoy & Her Neon Stars – [3 Song EP]

Mae McCoy’s ‘Andrews’ or ‘Maguire’ style of close harmony (with Lisa Layne Stewart) over her Western Swing sextet’s performances is appropriate and dead-on authentic. Since their founding in Sacramento back in 2008, they have pretty much been West Coast luminaries in the Swing genre’s resurgence.

On their EP this group’s high level of musicianship is on grand display. Their members are recognized contemporary Swing aristocracy, including such names as Emily (Asleep At The Wheel) Gimble, Jess (Jake Hooker) Meador and Jim (Ray Price) Loessberg. Dancers couldn’t wish for more! Ms. McCoy is also Vice President of the Western Swing Society & Hall of Fame so she is in the catbird’s seat to watch for top players.

The songs chosen to provide a taste of their forthcoming CD are “One More Time,” “At Sundown” and “Detour” (first made famous by Wesley Tuttle). While I do find McCoy’s pronunciation “de-tore” a bit distracting, the talent and the enthusiasm here are unarguable. Highly recommended, and definitely we are eager for the album release.
