John Michael Montgomery – The Little Girl

🎶 John Michael Montgomery’s “The Little Girl” tells a moving story of faith and comfort, with harmonies from Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski. ❤️ Do you remember hearing this country No. 1 for the first time? #whenthecowboysings #JohnMichaelMontgomery #TheLittleGirl #CountryMusic #CountryClassics

John Michael Montgomery’s “The Little Girl” begins with a child living through fear and ends with an image of comfort. Its final revelation gives the earlier verses a different meaning. Released by Atlantic in August 2000, the song brought Montgomery back to the top of the country chart with a story that listeners continue to discuss.

The Single: Harley Allen’s Song and a Familiar Voice

Harley Allen wrote “The Little Girl.” Montgomery recorded it with harmony vocals from Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski. The Academy of Country Music’s credits identify Buddy Cannon, Norro Wilson, and Montgomery as its producers.

The original American 7-inch single paired the song with “Brand New Me” on the reverse. Its Atlantic catalog number is 7-85006; the label below also identifies the guest singers and the album from which the recording came.

What Is “The Little Girl” About?

The narrator describes a girl growing up with addiction and violence at home. After her parents die in a murder-suicide, a foster family takes her in. At church, she recognizes Jesus in a picture and connects him with the comfort she remembers during that terrible night.

Allen’s inspiration came from an emailed story forwarded by his brother. That account should not be presented as a documented real-life event: the song’s history records the uncertainty surrounding its origin. The recording works as a religious story about reassurance through trauma.

The Album: Brand New Me

“The Little Girl” introduced Brand New Me, released by Atlantic on September 26, 2000. A contemporary Billboard report explains that early radio play followed an accidental leak, prompting Atlantic to advance the album’s release from October 10.

Montgomery keeps his delivery measured, giving the story room to unfold. Krauss and Tyminski’s harmonies soften the edges of the chorus. The contrast between the difficult verses and the reassuring refrain carries the performance without requiring Montgomery to turn every line into a dramatic climax.

A Return to No. 1

“The Little Girl” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart dated October 28, 2000. The original Billboard issue documents its arrival at the top. It held No. 1 for three weeks and also peaked at No. 35 on the Hot 100.

It became Montgomery’s seventh country No. 1. For another side of his ballad singing, revisit “I Love the Way You Love Me”, where the same direct approach serves a very different kind of story.
