The song reached number # 6 on the charts of U.S Hot Country Songs. The song was included in the debut album as David and Barbara's duo, A Perfect Match (Epic 1972)

“After Closing Time”, song written by Billy Sherrill, Danny Walls and Norro Wilson, was recorded by David Houston and Barbara Mandrell, for the Epic label, was recorded on July 22, 1970, at Columbia Recording Studio, 804 16th Ave. South, Nashville, TN. With the production of Billy Sherrill, the single was released on September 2, 1970, the song reached number # 6 on the charts of U.S Hot Country Songs, on November 21, 1970.

The song was included in the debut album as David and Barbara’s duo, A Perfect Match (Epic 1972), the album reached number # 38 on the U.S Top Country Albums charts.

This was the first album due Mandrell recorded and would be one of two she would release during her career. Houston had already experienced success the previous decade, with his # 1 country hit “Almost Persuaded.” Mandrell, on the other hand, was a newcomer, having released her debut album in 1971.

This album spawned two singles, both of them major hits on the country charts. The first, “After Closing Time”, reached the Top 10, peaking at # 6. The second, “I Love You, I Love You”, was released the following year under Epic Records, and also peaked at # 6. A Perfect Match was not as successful as those two singles, peaking at # 38 on the Top Country Albums chart in 1972. Besides the two singles, the album included a duet re-recording of Houston’s “Almost Persuaded “.

Tammy Wynette and George Jones also recorded the song for their album, We Go Together (Epic 1971), which was released on October 11, 1971.

David Houston & Barbara Mandrell – After Closing Time Lyrics

Well you can find me serving drinks inside a honky tonk
I’ll even play the jukebox on your dime
And sometimes I will dance with you to your favorite song
But she’ll be mine after closin’ time
She will smile at all the men and shake her pretty hips
And you can yell and say she look so fine
But I’m not looking for a man I’m looking for their tips
And she’ll be mine after closin’ time
When they turn the lights out that’s when I’ll turn him on
She can serve me love much better than wine
So when they close the doors I guess who takes me home
And she’ll be mine after closin’ time
[ guitar ]
Tomorrow night I’ll still be there inside that honky tonk
And I’ll still play the jukebox on your dime
But as long as you keep buyin’ drinks she’ll smile and lead you on
But she’ll be mine after closin’ time
When they turn the lights out…
She’ll be mine after closin’ time
